Sunday morning July 24th was hot even by St. Louis standards. The temperature would reach 104 degrees and the Chubb Trail that Big Shark Racing chose for the race is the most technical trail in the region. That didn’t limit the turnout or the impact of our IC3 juniors. These young men ask for nothing but to ride and race and wear the colors that proclaim Jesus. The junior race field was 11 racers. 4 of them are IC3 members, and two of the unattached juniors are Christians who are thinking of joining.
I knew Mike Teiber was going to have a great day when he patiently paced alongside me as I finished my last lap in the Expert race, in survival mode. He did a wheelie all the way up the steep hill leading to the singletrack. After my race was over (don’t ask- I finished and that was my victory- at 52 years old, the thermostat is shot!), I hung out in the shade to watch the boyz smoke the trail. The juniors started 2 minutes behind the Beginners, but the first racers through on lap 1 were juniors wearing IC3 jerseys. When the race finished, our juniors Kevin Ryder and Mike Teiber stood 1-2 on the podium. In third place was unattached David Duhadway and in 4th was Nathan Gallion. Both these guys came to the 8 AM worship service at my church before I shuttled them to the race. Jason Lumpkin, an IC3 junior who normally gets a lot of podium time, finished strong after flatting. The LORD blessed us and kept us all safe, even in the stifling heat and gnarly course. Look out for these guys at the 24 Hours of Moab- they are stoked!
